New varsity coach announced

Hartland High School announced on Aug 13 the hiring of our new varsity head coach, Deanna Radcliffe. Below is an excerpt from her email to the staff and returning players:

I am originally from Pennsylvania where I attended Temple University and played Division I lacrosse for 4 years. During my time at Temple I received Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, All- Conference team, All- Academic team, and Regional All -American. At Temple, we won 3 Atlantic 10 Championships and made 3 NCAA tournament appearances. I still continue to play competitively with a women’s travel team out of Chicago called Lakeshore Lacrosse. I hope to be able to utilize the knowledge that I gained from these experiences to help all of you reach your goals within the sport of lacrosse.

For the past 7 years I have run the Cyclones Travel Lacrosse program and was the varsity head coach at South Lyon High School. My overall record while at South Lyon was 98 wins, 20 losses, and 5 ties. I enjoyed my time at South Lyon, but am ready for a change and a new challenge.

When I am not coaching, I am teaching in Howell Public Schools. I am currently a special education teacher at Hutchings Elementary. I also recently completed my master’s degree from MSU in Sports Leadership & Coaching. I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach at Hartland. I will be in contact with you all again very soon to let you know about fall conditionings and lacrosse workouts. I am looking forward to the start of the 2013 season!

Thank you for your time and I look forward to meeting all of you very soon!

If you wish to contact Coach Radcliffe, your can email her at hartlandlacrosse@gmail.com.

Welcome to our family, Coach Radcliffe!

Sports Illustrated included our very own Ryan Skomial in their "Faces in the Crowd" feature which hit the newsstands Wednesday, May 23.

The magazine had the following to say about Ryan, "Ryan, a junior center at Hartland High, had her ninth six-plus goals performance this season with six scores and two assists in a 22-9 win over Flint Powers for the state's No. 1-ranked Division 1 team. She topped all Michigan players with 138 total points; she also led the state in assists, with 56. Last year she was named all-state with 63 total points, despite missing five games because of a hip injury. Ryan is orally committed to Grand Valley State."

Hartland beats Brighton!

Hartland beats Brighton, 15-13
The Hartland varsity team is all smiles as they walk off Sloan Field (in Brighton) after defeating Brighton, 15-13, Friday night.

On Friday night in Brighton, Hartland (7-1) was finally able to get the monkey off their backs by beating Brighton, 15-13. The match-up had its share of drama — let's just say the players, coaches, and fans from both cities take this rivalry VERY seriously.

Hartland lost to Brighton in the regional finals last year in overtime, so this win resets everything. A potentially epic battle between these two physical, emotionally-charged teams should happen in the playoffs later this season.

GAME PHOTOS

Hartland's leading scorer Friday night was senior Haley Crouse with SIX goals! Ryan Skomial added four goals and Rachel Gibbs found the net twice. Amber Crouse, Natalie Sochacki and Rachel Sharpe each scored one goal.

Junior goaltender, Tabitha Ferguson had on AMAZING game — blocking 12 of 23 shots on goal. Tabs came up BIG with some huge stops late in the game when Brighton was rallying, but she held them off to secure the win for Hartland. Way to go Tabs!

Hartland travels to Ann Arbor Huron on Monday. Go Eagles!

Off-season Opportunities

Conditioning

If you haven't yet, it's time to get in gear! From the day tryouts start to our first scrimmage, we have less than 2 weeks. We need to be in shape BEFORE tryouts begin. Many of the girls have been taking advantage of our great resource in Chez, our strength and conditioning coach and we'd like to see even more girls start to get going. As always, it is non-mandatory, but the girls need to be working out somewhere and Chez does a great job of focusing on sport specific exercises.

  • Every Monday and Thursday from 3:15-4:30 (meet on the indoor track)

Playing Opportunities

  • University of Michigan Skills Clinic (Sunday, February 5)
  • Grand Valley Winter Wonder 5 v 5 Tournament (Sunday, February 26)
  • Oakland 5 v 5 Tournament at Pontiac Silverdome (Sunday, March 11)

Contact Coach Katie for details.

Hartland hires new JV Coach

In an email to staff, players and parents, dated January 2, 2012, varsity head coach Katie Gutteridge wrote the following:

We went through an interview process to help find a new JV coach that would be a great fit in our program, and I'm excited to announce that Tim Bausack has been officially hired by Jason Reck (athletic director) as the new girls lacrosse JV coach. Tim comes on to the Hartland team after coaching the club Varsity program at Carmen Ainsworth for several years and serving as the coach for the Flint Tropics, an area summer/fall travel team. Tim is US Lacrosse Level 1 certified and has a true passion for the game, coaching, and to keep learning more about the sport. Many of the girls had the opportunity to meet Tim over the summer as he helped to coach one of the tournaments that I was unable to be at. I am confident that Tim will be a great fit for the girls and the program and look forward to working with him.

Welcome to our family, Coach Bausack!

Coach Gutteridge also had this to say about former JV coach, Aaron Skomial:

I can't say thank you enough for all the time and energy Aaron has put into the program over the years and continues to put in now. He was an integral piece in building the program to where it is now, developed great relationships with the girls and families, and we're so lucky to have him use his time and expertise to continue helping girls develop in the off season.

You're awesome "Coach" Sko! Enjoy retirement!
